Natural hormone replacement debate ongoing for aging and quality of life

Persons who have lost the energy to exercise and have fallen into depression are sometimes given the approved FDA products sanctioned for drug companies who use synthetics to manufacture pills such as Prozac, etc.  If synthetic hormones, such as Premarin are prescribed, the FDA recommends short term use due to possible side effects.  The FDA contends that aging is a natural process and that natural hormone replacement should not be considered  in the order of the cycle of life.

According to the Hormone Replacement Center (HRC), natural hormone replacement therapy is different from synthetic hormones that are given to women in different stages of life.  In 2008, the FDA was cracking down on natural hormone replacements and threatened to shut down compound pharmacies.

The debate continues and according to Life Extension Magazine, in January, 2009, Oprah Winfrey aired a show that featured Dr. Mehmet Oz as an investigator into the viability of compounded hormones to relieve aging symptoms.  Winfrey ended her show by stating, "We have got a right to demand a better quality of life for ourselves, and that's what doctors have got to start respecting."  The article, "Unscientific Bio-identical Hormone Debate,"  written by William Faloon goes into some detail on the compounding of products that can be bought on the open market.

In 2009, H.R. 584 was introduced in Congress that would provide Medicare and insurance coverage for alternative therapy for women with menopause.  This bill is still in committee in 2010.  Since both men and women can benefit from hormone replacement, approval for help for men may soon follow.

Men or women benefits of bio-identical replacement therapy

According to claims from pharmacies and clinics, the symptoms of aging can be alleviated through a bio identical combination of plant derived hormones to match the natural estrogen, testosterone and progesterone levels from age 20.

Symptoms such as night sweats and/or sleeplessness, anxiety, panic attacks, dryness, mood swings, headaches, weight gain, inability to focus and depression start to subside and eventually disappear altogether.  Energy levels increase and the joy of living returns.

Choice of health care procedures ultimately rest with the individual.  If seniors find that regular medical care is not giving the quality of life expected, and if all FDA approved options have been researched, a decision has to be made on whether to investigate natural options.  If a person accepts that bad health with aging is part of the cycle of life and that age deserves all the discomfort, pain and suffering, then it may be time to change health care providers who may have better answers, or continue life and live with the misery.
